Fake news
news stories that are false: the story itself is fabricated with no verifiable facts, sources, or quotes
Disinformation
false information deliberately and often covertly spread in order to influence public opinion or obscure the truth
Propaganda
the selective use of information for political effect
Factoid
an item of unreliable information that is repeated os often that is becomes accepted as a fact
Medium
intermediate agency, channel of communication
Mass Media
any means of communication that reaches large numbers of people
Functionalist perspective of media (4)
- coordinates the operation of industrial and postindustrial societies
- important agents of socialization
- agent of social control (ensure conformity)
- provide entertainment
Conflict perspective of media (3)
- there are those that benefit - the dominant class and politicians, and those who don’t - the marginalized groups
- who “owns” the media? - and what repercussions does this ownership have?
- what ‘truth’ (if any) is being presented
Advertising
fear of losing business may lead to news carriers to soften stories that big advertisers might find offensive
Sourcing
most news agencies rely heavily on government and corporate sources that routinely slant information to reflect favourably on their policies and preferences
Flak

How does modern technology impact communication?
- speed - amplified the rate at which we communicate with one another
- accessibility - changed how/when/where we communicate with one another
- efficiency - communicative acts accomplished with a minimum expenditure of time and effort
Social media
collective of online communication channels (platforms) dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration
Net neutrality
the principle that internet service providers should not restrict access to any online content
Online piracy
term used by internet service providers and online distributers of movies, music, and books to describe the downloading of copyright material without paying for it
Media imperialism
the domination of a mass medium by a single national culture and the undermining of other national cultures
Cultural studies
refer to popular interdisciplinary areas of research
Two step flow of communication
between mass media and audience members involves (1) respected people of high status and independent judgment evaluating media messages, and (2) other members of the community being influenced to varying degrees by these opinion leaders.
