Chapter 18: Immune Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
Hypersensitivity
A
Overzealous immune responses to harmless foreign material
2
Q
Type 1: Immediate
A
- immediate response to allergen
- also called anaphylactic
- reagin: IgE class
3
Q
Mechanism of activation
A
- 1st exposure to allergen: makes IgE antibodies that bind to mast cells and basophils. These cells become sensitized
- 2nd exposure to allergen: degranulation occurs and histamine is released by basophils and mast cells
4
Q
Localized anaphylaxis
A
- Not life threatening
- Allergy (itchy rash, hives, runny nose)
5
Q
Generalized anaphylaxis
A
- Systemic reaction
- Life threatening
- Causes anaphylactic shock (blood vessels dilate, blood pressure drops, airways constrict)
