VA, NC, TN, ARL did secede too
- VA symbolic, close to capitol, huge population, transportation, Lee
- Richmond became capitol to thank Virginia for seceding

MO, KT, MD, DL didn’t secede
- MO, slave going down, would be attack first if with South
- KT- food, military, Ohio River, population to pull from
- MD- keeps capitol not surrounded by South
- West VA- new state with North

3 divide the South by taking the Mississippi River

East- taking Richmond, 2 battles of Lee, Gettysburg and Antietam
West- Everything along Miss River- New Orleans, Vicksburg, Shiloh Church

- McDowell- army of Union, take Richmond by land
- “Stonewall” Jackson- held for holding Manassas Jackson
- shows the Union that this was going to harder than we thought

-constructed a mechanism to build the transcontinental railroad
Checker Board Layout:
Black spaces are 10 mile squares for companies, but they have to build the railroad, they then sell the land. The white part is for fed govt they also sell land

Made a national currency called “greenbacks”
National Banking Acts (1863 and 1864)
-anything that crosses a state line is an extra 10% unless you use greenbacks
-gets people to want greenback, causing banks to have to ask for them, but if they want them:
1 we regulate your stuffs
2 1/3 of deposits to war bonds
-generates money for govt during war
