Ostend Manifesto
To take Cuba and turn it into a slave state with Pierce’s administration:

- Amb to France- Mason-OM
“Black Warrior”
Used as a decoy for Spain to capture to create a conflict that was used as an excuse fir America to take Cuba by force.
Japan
Japan closes themselves off from the rest of the world. Perry goes to Japan and basically says, let us trade with you or we’ll kill you all. japan agrees.
-Japan takes notes on our country and how it does well and mocks it for Japan and it works
Gadsden Purchase
- inspiration for Kansas-Nebraska Act
- purchased for 10 million dollars to secure our boarder with Mexico
Compromise of 1850 for KNA
- by Stephen Douglas. Northern Democrat from Illinois
- wanted transcontinental railroad to go through Chicago
- slavery would be allowed in Kansas Territory, but it wouldn’t happen
Kansas-Nebraska Act

2 railroad goes through Chicago, Illinois
- Secret Six- 2 were the Tappan Brothers
- New England Emigrant Aid Society- paid for people to move into Kansas Territory

Dread Scott Decision
- Taney denied humanity to all blacks, not just slaves
- erased 36 30”, constitutions that said slavery is illegal was unconst.
LeCompton Constitution
For Kansas, Buchanan said the first constitution submitted will be put on the ballot, warned LeCompton before announcement, and used theirs, it was a set up.
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
-was for seat of governorship of IL
-Douglas says Lincoln is abolitionist
-Lincoln says Douglas is pro slavery
-Lincoln’s Question:
Did the Dread Scott Decision end pop.sov?
-Douglas said: No it didn’t, people could still vote on matters
-Freeport Doctrine- people decide if they want slavery or not
John Brown II (MHMMM!)
- wanted to free 4 million slaves by arming them
- crossed Ohio River, raided federal armory, told slaves to come and arm yourselves up
- train came, shot the conductor, let the train go, Marines came and stopped John Brown
Election of 1860
- North Dem.- Douglas- can’t commit to Dread Scott, already to Freeport
- South Dem.- Breckenridge- slaves
- Constitutional Union Party- John Bell- let’s come together as one
- Republican- Lincoln- won without any Southern votes
Secession
- SC, MI, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX secede
- Crittenden Conpromise- slavery in South, banned in North, none in territories
