Norms
Rules that regulate social life
Role
A given social position that is governed by a set of norms for ‘proper’ behavior.
Entrapment
A gradual process in which individuals escalate their commitment to a course of action to justify their investment of time, money or effort.
Fundamental attribution error
The tendency, in explaining other’s behavior, to overestimate personality factors and underestimate the influence of the situation
Just-world hypothesis
The belief that the world if fair, and that bad people are punished, and good people are rewarded.
Cognitive Dissonance
When a person’s beliefs are inconsistent with their behavior
Social Facilitation
The tendency to use other people’s behavior as a standard for judging the appropriateness of your own
Social loafing
The tendency for people to apply less effort when they work as members of a group than when they work alone
Group think
The tendency for all members of a group to think alike for the sake of harmony and to suppress disagreement
Group polarization
The tendency for members of a group discussing an issue to move toward a more extreme version of the positions they held before the discussion began
Bystander Effect
The finding that the more people are around, the less likely it is that any one of them will help an individual in need of assistance.
Social identity
The part of a person’s self-concept that is based on his or her identification with a social affiliation
Prejudice
A strong, unreasonable dislike of a group and its members
The Media Contagion effect
Coverage of mass shooters influences potential shooters, promoting the belief that they will be rewarded with fame for their crime.
Sympathy
Feelings of concern or compassion resulting from an awareness of the suffering or sorrow of another
