Peers and Families
means children are busy, almost anything that you give a child this age to do they’ll do
industry (erikson)
something could go wrong- they feel that they are less “good” than anyone else
inferiority (erikson)
psych-social development takes place on 2 fronts:
- adult-child relationship (provide support and teach basic social skills)
- peer relationship (teach cooperation, competition and intimacy)
those children of roughly the same age and social status with whom they learn and play
peer group
the ability to understand and empathize with others
social cognition
children who don’t learn social skills from each other might even go through life with 2 big limitations:
- social isolation
2. sense of inferior
is a child who is rejected by other children b/c they’re too mean, b/c they’re aggressive all the time (might think that have to bully to fit in)
aggressive-rejected child
a child who is also rejected by his/her peer group, but isn’t acting out aggressively, is more internally withdrawn, might be more anxious, might fit more of a classic victim kind of appearance
withdrawn-rejected child
a child repeatedly inflicts harm on others through physical, verbal or social attacks
bullying
a family should provide 5 basic needs:
- children need food, shelter and clothing
- encourage learning
- nurture peer friendship
- provide harmony and stability
- develop self-esteem
lack of confidence, nerves breakdown, depressed, becomes violent, drug use, reaching out to other family members or friends are examples of
coping
