Abuse and Neglect
either or both parents beat the child violently and consistently. the results of the beating are visible
severe physical abuse
parents beat their children only now and then, when drunk or stressed, beating tend to be less violent
moderate physical abuse
not providing the child with most basic requirements of life- namely food. failure to secure the food or make it edible
severe child neglect
includes a lack of adequate clothing, cleanliness, medical care
moderate child neglect
sexual interactions with the child, which may include fondling, as well as intercourse. could be perpetrated by a family member or someone external to the family
sexual abuse
factors that predispose parents to child maltreatment; issue of etiology in terms of 4 different levels of contribution:
- ontology
- microsystem
- exosystem
- macrosystem
Ontology of Parents; several frequent similarities between abusive and neglectful parents in terms of their own developmental history or upbringing
- Abuse or neglected themselves as children
- exposed to high levels of violence
- Parental rejection
- absence of experience of knowledge about caring for kids
the Microsystem- family context and characteristics that directly impinge upon the child (8);
- characteristics of the children that foster maltreatment (prematurity; irritable or fussy; less socially responsive, or passive and lethargic; hyperactivity or a highly active child)
- emotionally needy parents
- interactions between parents and children are less positive and more negative
- inconsistent discipline
- derogation of the victim
- marital discord and stress
- household disorganization
- family size
the exosystem- large social system in which the family is embedded. factors that indirectly impact the child (2);
- the world of work: Unemployment of Low Job satisfaction
2. the lack of Parental support systems
the macrosystem- the culture within the family and neighborhood are embedded
- cultural attitudes toward violence
