What is a critical incident?
any event or situation that causes or has the potential to cause harm, serious bodily injury or death, property damage, legal involvement and media activity
What are the 3 main categories for critical incidents?
Man Made
Safety and Rescue
Criminal or threat incidents
What is the National Incident Management System (NIMS)?
designed to provide a consistent nationwide approach for federal, state, and local governments
to work effectively and efficiently together to prepare for, prevent, respond to, and recover from
domestic incidents, regardless of cause, size, or complexity
What is the Incident Command System (ICS)?
a standard, on-scene, all-hazard incident management system.
What are the basic elements for the ICS?
Common terminology, communications and accountability
What are the 2 main priorities of a first line supervisor responding to a critical incident?
to act and to communicate
What are the 5 major ICS functions?
- Incident Command
- Operations
- Planning

What are the possible levels of operation FEMA recomends during a critical incident and what are they?
Divisions: used to divide an incident geographically.
Groups: used to describe functional areas of operation.
Branches: used when the number of divisions or groups exceeds the span of control (can
be either geographical or functional).
Difference between taskforce and strike team?
Task force is a combo of mixed resources under a leader
Strike team is a set number of resources of same kind under a leader
Composition of a tactical team
Perimeter control, assault ream, sniper/observer
