chapter 14 - rna and protein synthesis Flashcards
RNA
ribonucleic acid; single stranded nucleic acid with sugar ribose
mRNA
messenger RNA; carries instructions for amino acid assembly, long strand
rRNA
ribosomal RNA; combines with proteins to create ribosomes
tRNA
transfer RNA; carries amino acids to the ribosomes
RNA editing
introns are removed, exons are kept, cap and tail are added
polypeptide chain
long chain of amino acids that makes a protein
codon
group of 3 mRNA bases
anticodon
on tRNA, complementary to codons, has matching base pairs
translation
mRNA is converted to amino acids
mutation
heritable change in genetic information
point mutation
a few base pairs change; eg. frameshift (insertion or deletion), substitution
mutagen
something that may cause a mutation
polyploidy
having an extra set of chromosomes
chromosomal mutation
entire chromosomes are mutated; eg. deletion, duplication, inversion, translocation
