Chapter 13 Vocabulary Flashcards
Reflexes which are processed in the brain
Cranial reflexes
They monitor the external tension developed during muscle contraction
Golgi tendon organs
A series of specialized membranes surrounding the spinal cord
Spinal meninges
Acts as a shock absorber and a diffusion medium for dissolved gases, nutrients, chemical messengers, and wastes in the subarachnoid space
Cerebrospinal fluid
An example of a withdrawal reflex that affects the muscles of a limb
Flexor reflex
Reflexes in which the important interconnections and processing events occur in the spinal cord
Spinal reflexes
Rapid, automatic responses to specific stimuli
Reflexes
The sensory receptors involved in the stretch reflex
Muscle spindles
Autonomic reflexes which control systems other than skeletal muscle
Visceral reflexes
Involves a contralateral reflex arc (contra = opposite)
Crossed extensor reflex
A reflex resulting in the curling of the toes
Plantar reflex
A reflex resulting in the fanning of the toes
Babinski sign (positive Babinski reflex)
Provide a mechanism for the involuntary control of the muscular system
Somatic reflexes
The patellar reflex is an example of this type of reflex
Stretch reflex
Reflexes which result from the connections that form between neurons during development
Innate reflexes
