Chapter 13: intervention with kids and adolescents Flashcards
what is the weighted least squares methods?
data from larger samples have less error variance (deviations from the normal population) and are closer to the population values. the weighted least squares method takes this into account by assigning LESS weight in the meta-analysis studies with greater error variance (ones with smaller samples) and more heavily weighting on those with less error variance
What is oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
a pattern of persistent negativistic and hostile behaviour that is evident before age 8
children with ODD might move on to have conduct disorder (CD) when they are older
what Is parent management training (PMT)?
developed by Gerald Patterson
it is grounded in social learning theory and the assumption that oppositional child behaviour can be changed by modifying the child’s social environment rather than by working directly with the child
core element of PMT is to increase the amount of positive interactions between parent and child)
what are the 5 parenting practices that are associated with the development of prosocial or deviant behaviour?
skill pencouragement
discipline
monitoring
problem solving (through smiles, attention and verbal encouragement)
positive reinforcement
What is Multi-systemic therapy?
for children who are seriously disturbed delinquent adolescents
it is grounded in ecological theory (a theory that examines a young persons functioning within multiple contexts where they live like family, school…etc)
goals of MST are positive and future oriented and uses behavioural approaches to integrate services
it is short but super intense
rate of adolescent depression in the US by age 18?
one in 5 adolescents experienced a major depressive episode
what is the Coping with Depression in Adolescence (CWDA) PROGRAM?
developed by Peter Lewinsohn
focuses on behaviours, cognitions and management of affect
behaviour –> increasing fun activities, developing problem solving skills, assertiveness..etc
congitive techniques –> promoting positive self talk, self monitoring, coping
the affective component –> learning strategies for dealing with. negative emotions like relaxation and anger management
uses psychoeducation
