Chapter 13 - Cloud Formation Flashcards
What can cause air to cool when it is moving
A different surface below ie sea to land
What happens when air meets the isothermal part of the atmosphere
It is false to spread out - this can be the anvil
most common for air to be stable above this
Give the process of up life to form a cloud
air is false to rises
as it rises it is cool adiabatically because it is expanding
starts to condense which creates a cloud
Turbulent uplift / mixing =
is causes by surface friction or surface heating to a height of 3000ft
Air will mix to an extent that it reaches dew point and forms a cloud.
Inversion stops it from rising any higher
Orographic / Topographical clouds
The air meets a mountain range and it false to rise which means it cools adiabatically. reaches dew point and forms a cloud
What happens if it is warm stable air going over a hill
it will be using the SALR and cause condensation quicker and have to precipitate. Once over the hill the air will be dryer and warmer
What cloud is form on a hill in dry condition?
Lenticular
Convergence uplift
Two air masses are converging of the ground and get heat by the surface it causes the air to rise and cool adiabatically. forms a cloud.
Frontal clouds
A warm front moves and will false the air upwards when it meets cold, causing adiabatic cooling
A cold front moves and meets warm air which will false itself underneath therefore causing the air to rise - adiabatic cooling.
What causes the cold nose
surface friction causing warm buoyant air to be below and rise rapidly
