Define City-State.
A city in the “center” with a region centered around it, in which it controls.
What was the organization of the Italian city-states?
There were 5 main- Florence, Naples, Papal States, Milan, and Venice
Made powerful alliances wit one another, but their lack of unity was what left them open to invasion
What was the Balance of Power among the Italian City-states?
City-states would gain power just to be pushed down by another.
What is individualism?
Branch of Humanism
Focused on expressing unique characteristics and qualities
Unique people such as artists, philosophers, and musicians were praised
What is Humanism?
A study of human nature and behavior
Often relates to relations and criticism of the church
People spoke about about how they felt- perspective
Study of the greek and latin classics
What is secularism?
An idea of a focus on the material wourld rather than the afterlife and religion

Describe the status of Women during the Renaissance.
Upper class women began to receive a boy’s education
Most stayed at home, cared for family, and married for political reasons
Did not get the same pay as men
What was the difference in the North?
Were not ready to move on from Christianity- religious approach
Extra stress on education and arts
