Chapter 12: Technological Influences On Human Performance Flashcards
What is a repetitive stress injury?
Damage caused by repetitive movement to tendons, nerves, muscles or other soft body tissues
What is ergonomics?
Those who study this field are interested in finding out how the relationship between humans and machines can be made as efficient as possible
What is personal protective equipment?
Gear that protects players against injury. Includes padding, bracing and taping, mouth guards and head gear
What is equipment revolution?
Contributes to advances in sports. Allows athletes to push themselves to greater achievements
What is wicking properties?
The ability of a fabric to draw moisture away from an athletes skin. New innovation in sports wear design has much improved this property
What is the clap skate?
Allows the skater to raise the heel off the ice, as the blade of the skate rotates on a hinge. The blade is in contact with the ice longer and delivers more power per stride.
What is full body swimsuits?
Designed to reduce drag in water. Made with super stretch fabric with built in edges, the pattern cause the seams to emulate tendons and provide tension, while fabric panels stretch and return to original shape, mimicking muscles.
What is a lifting shirt?
For weight lifters the shirt acts as a spring aiding in control as the bar is lowered and pressed up
What is artificial turf?
Less safe than naturals grass; synthetic surfaces are less cushioning, harder to maintain and injuries can occur from raised seams. Leads to impact type injuries to ligaments, joints and tendons.
What is motion analysis?
Video camera slow motion playback feature provides motion analysis tool for analyzing the smallest movements that affect performance
What is virtual realities technology?
Through the use of computers, virtual reality immerses viewers in “virtual worlds”. Used to help athletes train without having to travel or risk injury
