Chapter 12 Study Guide: Injuries to the Wrist, Arm, and Hand FINAL Flashcards
Little League Elbow
Little league elbow is a painful inflammation of the bony bump on the inside of the elbow. This spot is the attachment site where the tendons of the muscles that bend your wrist and fingers are located.
What bone can be palpated in the anatomical snuffbox?
the scaphoid bone
What is the difference between Little League Elbow and Golfers Elbow
Little league elbow is a specific overuse injury, primarily affecting young athletes, while golfers elbow can affect anyone and is normally associated with too much gripping motions and playing golf.
How many carpal bones are there?
There are eight carpal bones
Golfers Elbow
Medial humeral epicondulitis related to the incorrect golf technique (inflammatory response of the soft tissue that attaches to the epicondyle)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
A complex set of symptoms resulting from pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel of the wrist, causing soreness and numbness.
Bennett’s Fracture
Fracture and or dislocation of the base of the first metacarpal bone (thumb) and trapezium (wrist)
Boxer’s Fracture
Fracture of the proximal or neck section of the fourth and or fifth metacarpal bones.
Gamekeeper’s Thumb
Sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
Mallet Finger
Deformity of the distal interphalangeal joint of the finger caused by an avulsion of the tendon of the extensor digitorum muscle from the distal phalanx.
Jersey Finger
Torn flexor tendon of finger typically due to the finger being caught in a jersey and pulled forcefully into extension
Boutonniere Deformity
Buttonhole deformity whereby the proximal interphalangeal joint of the finger is forced through the central band of the tendon of the extensor digitorum muscle.
Which nerve is affected in the carpal tunnel syndrome
The Median Nerve
Osteochondritis Dissecans
Condition in which a fragment of cartilage and underlying bone are detached from the articular surface, also called “joint mice”
