Motivation
Is defined as the forces that drive people to behave in ways that energize, direct, and sustain work.
Herzberg’s two factor theory
Focuses on satisfiers (includes responsibility, advancement, and personal growth) and dissatisfiers/hygiene factors (pay, working conditions, and coworker and supervisor relations).
Alderfer’s erg theory
Focuses on three needs; first need is existence needs such as needs fundamental to our survival. Second need is relatedness related list needs are very similar to belonging and humans need interactions. Growth needs are the third needs which challenge and seek responsibility from people. This theory also talks about frustration/regression
David Mcclellans acquired need theory
This theory has three needs the first need which is the achievement need is developed an early age and is a need similar to a steam and growth in other theorists. The second category is affiliation which is a strong need to conform to this wishes and have strong social approval. Third is power is the need to enforce others and control the environment
Expectancy theory
These factors include expectancy (E->P), instrumentality (P->O), and valence (O)
Expectancy (E->P)
The believe that it can be done, example, confidence.
Instrumentality (P->O)
The likelihood of receiving outcomes with performance, example, link to rewards or negative outcomes.
Valence (O)
Nature of outcomes received, example, praise, promotion, bonus, teasing
Positive reinforcement
When a positive condition is presented following behavior.
Punishment
When something averse or negative happens following a behavior
Progressive discipline
A series of steps that get progressively more severe
Goal setting strategies for managers
1st Encourage employees to set specific and challenging goals, 2nd develop commitment to the goals, 3rd raise self efficacy, 4th delivered feedback on goal progress, 5th provide rewards for goal attainment
Actions taken to resolve perceived inequity
1st increase efforts to receive outputs, 2nd decrease inputs and receive the same outputs, 3rd change your comparison, 4th change the situation to find another job.
