Chapter 12 (Module 12.8) Flashcards
The mental functions that include processing and responding to complex external stimuli, recognizing related stimuli, processing internal stimuli, and planning appropriate responses to stimuli.
Cognition
Responsible for spatial awareness and attention.
Parietal association cortex
Responsible for recognizing stimuli , especially complex stimuli such as faces.
Temporal association cortex
Largest and most complex of the association cortices; responsible for the majority of cognitive functions that make up a persons “character or “personality.”
Prefrontal cortex
The ability to comprehend and produce words through speaking, writing, and /or singing, and to assign and recognize the symbolic meaning of a word correctly.
Language
When the Wernickes and Broca’s areas becomes readily apparent due to damage in one area, which results in a language deficit.
Aphasia
The inability to produce speech.
Broca’s area
The inability to understand language.
Wernicke’s area
The unequal distribution of cognitive functions in the right and left cerebral hemispheres.
Cerebral lateralization
The memory of things that are largely procedural or skill-based.
Nondeclarative memory
Memory that’s stored for a few seconds.
Immediate memory
stored for a few minutes and allows you to manipulate information with a general behavioral goal in mind.
Short-term (working) memory
Permanent form of storage for days, weeks, or even for your entire life.
Long-term memory
An increase in synaptic activity between associated neurons; the mechanism in which hippocampal neurons encode long-term declarative memories.
Long-term potential (LTP)
