Chapter 12 (Module 12.7) Flashcards
The homeostasis of vital functions such as the heart pumping, blood pressure, and digestion.
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
The reversible and normal suspension of consciousness.
Sleep
Meaning that we spend a period of the 24 hour cycle awake and another period of the cycle sleep.
Circadian rhythm
A test that measures the electrical activity of the brain via electrodes attached to the skin.
Electroencephalogram
Higher-amplitude, lower-frequency brain waves characteristics of stages 1-3 of sleep.
Theta waves
Higher-amplitude, lowest frequency brain waves characteristic of stage 4 sleep.
Delta waves
The stage of the sleep cycle characterized by rapid, back and forth eye movements during which most dreaming occurs.
Rapid eye movement (REM)
The name for stages 1-3 of the sleep cycle.
Non-rapid eye movement
Diminished level of cortical activity; arousable to strong or painful stimuli.
Stupor
Unarousable unconsciousness in which there are no purposeful responses to any stimuli, even pain.
Coma
Patient is awake but unaware because of damage to the cerebral cortex, and lacks any voluntary movements. (Head trauma or neurological injury)
Persistent vegetative state
