Chapter 11- Reporting Flashcards
are gram-positive
bacteria that are rod shaped and are able or have the ability to produce spores
Bacillus and Clostridium
needs a presence of oxygen to live.
aerobic
obtains food by absorbing
dissolved organic materials like dead or
decaying matters.
saprophytic
- Found in soil and are capable of long term
survival. It produces Protective Antigen, Edema Factor, and Lethal Factor. - Considered as a major potential agent if
bio terrorism because it forms spores very
easily and spread easily even in dry soil. - Produces an anthrax, which is a serious
infectious disease that can be transmitted
through contact with contaminated animal products and can be manifest through inhalation, injection etc.
Bacillus anthracis
Causes food poisoning and commonly found in soil and contaminated various food products, especially rice.
Bacillus cereus
Two distinct type of food poisoning
emetic and diarrheal type
associated with fried rice, milk, and pasta.
emetic type
associated with meal dishes and sauces
diarrheal type
needs and absence of oxygen to live
Anaerobic
Commonly found in soil, marine sediments, sewage and intestinal tracts of human and animals
clostridium
Causes a serious illness that weakens the
muscle that controls the eyes, face, mouth, and throat.
Can be found in soil and animal feces.
Can resist a 100 degree celcius heat for an
hour.
Have a resistance to acidic and saline
environment
Clostridium botulinum
Causes tetanus
Produces tetanospamin (causative
neurotoxin) that causes muscles stiffness
and lockjaw.
Requires vaccines and anti-tetanus
Clostridium tetani
Causes gangrene and myonerosis where
there is an infection in muscles
Associated with food poisoning, diarrhea, and ingestion of contaminated food.
Clostridium perfringens
Occur from a toxic shock after medical abortion with miferpristone and intravaginal misoprotol.
Associated with severe infections like endometritis, septicemia, and necrotizing fasciitis
Clostridium sordelli
inflammation of uterine lining
endometritis
