Chapter 11: muscles of the Axial Skeleton Flashcards
What muscle is located above the eyebrows and moves them upwards
Frontalis
What muscle retracts the scalp
Occipitalis
What muscle closes the eye
Obicularis oculi
What muscle draws the mouth upwards and laterally like when laughing
Zygomaticus major
What muscle elevates the upper lip such as in snearing
Zygomaticus minor
What muscle encircles the mouth and closes, purses, and protrudes lips
obicularis oris
Which muscle draws the corners of lips laterally to make a serious or awkard face
Risorious
This muscle pulls lower lip and angle of mouth downward
Platysma
compresses cheeks
buccinator
elevates and protrudes lower lip, elevates and wrinkles chin
Mentalis
closes jaw; elevates and retracts mandible; mains position at rest; lateral and medial movements (biting and chewing)
Temporalis
Prime mover of jaw closer; elevates mandible
masseter
depresses and protrudes tongue; draws tongue to one side
genioglossus
retracts and elevates tongue
styloglossus
depresses tongue
hyoglossus
Suprahyoid Group
Mylohyoid, geniohyoid, stylohyoid, digastric; help form the floor of the oral cavity, anchor tongue, and elevate hyoid and move larynx superiorly
Infrahyoid Group
Thyrohyoid, omohyoid, sternothyroid, sternohyoid; fix hyoid so suprahyoids can open mouth, depress hyoid and larynx during swallowing and speaking
Flexes and laterally rotate the head; prime mover of neck flexion
sternocleidomastoid
seperates thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities; prime mover of respiration
diaphragm
elevates and protracts ribs during inhalation
External Intercostals
depresses and retracts ribs during forced exhalation
internal intercostals
4 muscles of anterior body wall
external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, transverse abdominal, rectus abdominus
contralateral rotation of the waist
external abdominal oblique
ipsilateral rotation of the waist
internal abdominal oblique
does not contribute to movements of the vertebral column
transverse abdominis
Muscles running vertically from sternum to pubis and flexes lumbar region of vertebral column, flexes waist
rectus abdominis
Erector spinae group
Iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis; prime movers of back extension, 3 parallel columns running from cranium to sacrum
Composed of 2 muscles, pierced by rectum, urethra, and vagina
pelvic diaphragm
supports pelvic viscera, resists downward pressure when sneezing, coughing, vomiting; pubis to spine of ischium
levatator Ani
supports pelvic viscera; supports coccyx and pulls it forward after defecating and childbirth
coccygeus
diamond shaped zone between the thighs; inferior to the pelvic floor
perineum
Urogentital triangle
anterior region of the perineum
Anal triangle
posterior region of the perineum
prevents involuntary urination in males and females
external urethral sphincter
assist in urine retention present in females
compressor urethrae
external anal sphincter
prevents involuntary defecation
