advantages- full discussion of issue, minority opinions must be heard, likely to defend and be committed to decision, produces group satisfaction
disadvantages- difficult to achieve, becomes more difficult the larger the group is
majority rule
advantages- efficient, rapid closure on issues, may be only reasonable way to resolve dispute, used to break deadlock
disadvantages- can support unethical positions, encourage dominance power dynamic, tempted to decide too quickly
minority rule
advantages- one person in charge, advised by people
disadvantages- can ignore input, may engage in power plays, weak commitment to final decision
groupthink
process of group members stressing cohesiveness and agreement instead of skepticism and optimum decision making
cooperation, consensus, and cohesiveness are taken to extremes
disagreement is discouraged, pressure to agree, no structured decision making process
