Chapter 1.1~ Biomes Flashcards
Biotic and examples
Is every living organism in an environment. Plants, animals, fungi
Abiotic and examples
Are non-living parts in an environment. Like sunlight, soil, moisture, temp
Biome
Includes large regions that have similar biotic and abiotic components
Biosphere
The top layer on Earth where all living organisms live
Terrestrial
Land-based biomes
How many biomes are there and names
8
Tundra, boreal forest, temp deciduous forest, temp rainforest, grasslands, tropical rainfor, desert, permanent ice
Two most important abiotic factors that influence biomes
Temp, precipitation
Other factors
Latitude, elevation, ocean currents
Latitude
Is the distance measured in degrees north or south from the equator. At equator rays of sun shine almost straight down. This causes 12 hours sun all year and little annual fluctuation in temp. Zone around equator called the tropical zone. Latitude also effects precip, sunlight heats moist air which rises and cools and turns to rain. The land and ocean the are on the equator receive lots of rainfall. Temperate regions experience collision or cold and warm air which results of seasonal rainfall patterns
Elevation
Is the height is the landmass above sea level. Temp changes occur because the atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner air retains less heat. Also has effect on precip patterns. Windward side of mountain receives lots of rain and snow while leeward doesn’t. Biome at top of mountain is different from the bottom.
Ocean current
Are another factor that affects temp and precip. Makes them warmer and wetter.
Climate
Is the average pattern of weather conditions that occur in a region which are recorded and observed over a period of years
Climatograph
Is a graph of climate data for a specific region over a period of time for local weather
Adaptations
are characteristics that enable organisms to better survive and reproduce
Three types
Structural, physiological, and behavioural
