Naomi Wolf, a system of social control that encourages women to focus on their appearances to the detriment of full de-velopment of their humanity
What is bottom/top surgery?
Bottom any of a number of gender-validating surgeries per-formed on the genitalia
Top number of gender-validating surgeries per-formed on the chest
What is cisgender?
those whose gender identities match their as-signed sex at birth
What is colourism?
system that privileges and values lighter skin and rewards lighter-skinned people
for example, the assumption that “good” hair is straighter/non-kinky in African-descent communities.
What is disability?
“an umbrella term, covering impair-ments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions
What is fat-shaming?
bully-ing of overweight and obese people
What does fetishized mean?
In this context, to be made into an object of habitual erotic fixation
What is gender dysphoria?
psychiatric category de-scribing persistent discomfort with one’s bio-logical sex.
What is gender verification?
involves a variety of tests conducted on female athletes to be sure that they are bio-logical females. (a.k.a sex testing)
What is the male gaze?
dominant cultural way of seeing, which adopts the perspective of a desir-ing heterosexual male subject
What is muscle dysmorphia?
one sees one’s body as thin, puny, or flabby relative to those of other men and to societal ideals
What is no-ho?
Referring to trans people who choose not to take sex hormones
What is self-objectification?
internaliz-ing an outsider’s perspective on one’s own body, leading to a preoccupation with one’s appear-ance and comportment as perceived by others
What is sexual reassignment surgery (SRS)?
Any or all surgeries aimed at bringing one’s body into conformity with one’s gender identity
What is transgender?
Feeling a strong sense of gender identity consistent with inhabiting an other-sex body.
What is transsexual?
late-twentieth-century term de-scribing an individual who seeks sex reassign-ment and consequently changes sex
What is transvestite?
Those who dress in the cloth-ing of the opposite sex, for reasons including matters of identity, disruption of social norms, or sexual fetishism.
