What is bride price?
A sum of money paid by a groom to his wife’s family is generally thought to exist to compensate the bride’s family for the loss of the daughter’s productive labour and her social value; the practice is particularly common in some Asian and African societies.
What is a chosen family?
A group of individuals, usually not related through biological or kin ties, who provide emotional commitment, intimacy, and support; chosen families have been particularly important in the LGBTQ community.
What is companionate marriage?
An ideal of marriage as a loving partnership became more common after the late eighteenth century and eventually implied free choice and “marriage for love.” Not to be confused with current practices of egalitarian, childless, or dissoluble partnerships sometimes described under the same name.
What does culturally scripted?
Based on a pattern of speech and interaction that is normative within a particular group or culture.
What is dowry?
A sum of money settled upon a bride by her family or transferred to her groom at marriage.
What is emotion work?
The works performed to maintain emotional ties and harmony, to produce comfort and ease in family members, and generally, to make the family a “haven in a heartless world.” The difference between emotional labour and emotional work is that the former is part of an employment relationship. In contrast, emotional work is performed in the private sphere.
What is meant by instrumental?
A term describes traits associated with competition, assertiveness, and action.
What is the minority stress theory?
A theory is that prejudice and discrimination result in chronic and severe stress and, therefore, poor health outcomes, among members of marginalized groups.
What is sociophonetics?
The studies of the relationship among social norms, speech patterns, and changes therein.
