Chapter 10.1: Circles Flashcards
Circle
set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a given point, called the center of the circle.
Circle Interior
the points inside form the circle’s interior.
Circle Exterior
the points outside the circle form its exterior.
Chord
a segment whose endpoints are on the circle.
Diameter
is a chord that passes through the center.
Radius
a segment that has the center as one endpoint and a point on the circle as the other endpoint.
Tangent
a line that intersects the circle at exactly one point.
Point of tangency
the point at which it intersects the circle.
Secant
a line that intersects the circle in two points.
Common tangent
a line that is tangent to two circles.
Common external tangent
a common tangent that does not intersect the segment that joins the centers of the circles.
Common internal tangent
a common tangent that intersects the segment that joins the centers.
Tangent circles
circles that have exactly one point of intersection.
Concentric circle
circles that have the same center but different radii.
Congruent circles
two circles are congruent if their radii are congruent.
