preparticipation physical examination (PPE)
a medical screening procedure designed to determine an athlete’s readiness for participation in a specific sport at a specific level of compeition
disqualifying conditions
injuries, illnesses, or other medical conditions that pose an undue risk to athletes, their teammates, or their competitors
mass screening
a PPE method whereby many athletes are screened simultaneously, usually in a school gymnasium or locker room
health history update
a brief questionnaire designed to determine whether an athlete suffered any injuries or developed any medical conditions since the last comprehensive PPE
station PPE
a group screening process whereby information for individual athletes is collected at a variety of statiosn staffed by a combination of medical and nonmedical personnel, usually in the context of a school environment
health history form
a detailed questionnaire designed to document an athlete’s previous injureis, illnesses, and other medical conditions. this form often serves as the basis for additonal medical follow-up and evaluation
maturational assessment
a medical screening procedure based on Tanner’s stages of maturational development. The assessment is often used to classify children and adolescents for the purpose of matching them with appropriate athletic opponents
tanner stages
a method for assessing physical maturation by categorizing the development of secondary sexual characteristics
loss of consortium
a legal claim of damages for injuries to a spouse or for alienation fo a spouse’s affection
preemployment test
any procedure (including a drug test) conducted on a potential employee that is used to determine tha applicant’s suitability for employment
random selection
a method for choosing subjects for drug testing based on permutations of timing, subject characteristics, or both. Implies an equal probaility of choosing any subject within a given population for testing
reasonable suspicion
a basis for selecting subjects for drug testing based on observable signs of drug use. Also known as reasonable cause or probable cause
Enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT)
a first-line screenign procedure designed to detect abuse of drugs or the presence or performance-enhancing drugs by testing an athlete’s urine
gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
a highly accurate method for detecting the presence of performance-enhancing and other drugs, including anabolic steriods, in an athlete’s urine
false-positive test
the results of a drug test that indicate teh presence of a banned compound above an acceptable level, when in fact the compound is either absent or present below acceptable levels
