Power is the potential to influence. Athletic Trainers have 2 forms of power: personal & position. Authority is the aspect of power, granted to either groups or individuals, that legitimizes the right of the individual or group to make deicions on behalf of others. Leadership is the process of influencing the behavior & attitudes of others to achieve intended outcomes. Leadership takes 2 forms: transactional & transformational. Transactional leadership involves the exhange of one thing for another between 2 people in a relationship. It makes up the majority of managerial tasks that athletic trainers perform. Transformational leadership raises the standards of the program or organization through the creative use of conflict & change. It is essential for the ongoing health & development of a sports medicine program.
understand the historical trends in managment & how they might apply to athletic training
at least three distinct trends in management theory occurred in the 20th century. The primary goal of scientific managment was to increase productivity. The human relations school of management theory emphaszed involving individuals in every level of an organization in decision making for goal accomplishment. Modern management theories include Field Theory, McGregor’s Theory X and Theory
Y, & Deming’s Total Qualtiy Managment
Understand the various managerial roles that athletic trainers assume
managment is the element of the leadership process that involves planning, decision making, & coordinating the activies of a group of people working toward a common goal. Athletic Trainers play many managerial roles, which can be generalized into three groups: interpersonal, informational (which includes elements of both verbal & nonverbal communication), & decisional roles
understand the various strategies that athletic trainers can employ to improve their managerial effectiveness
Athletic trainers can improve their managerial effectiveness by using nine techniques: making polite requests, making request in a confident toone, making clear requests, making legitimate requests, explaining the reasons for the requests, using proper channels, exercising authority regularly, insisting on compliance, & being responsive to concerns of subordinates
