Chapter 10: Collecting Data Using Attitudinal Scales Flashcards
1
Q
Attitudinal Scales in Quantitative Research
A
- closed questions with categories
2
Q
3 Types of Attitudinal Scales
A
- Likert Scale
- Thurstone Scale
- Guttman Scale
3
Q
Likert Scale
A
- ordered scale from which respondents choose one option
- numbers are usually assigned to each option (1 to 5)
4
Q
Constructing a Likert Scale
A
- collect statements
- group test: give statements to a small group to test them for clarify - rating the extent they are appropriate
- assign numerical values to positive and negative statements
- calculate each respondent’s attitudinal score
- identify non-discriminative items
- eliminate non-discriminative items
- construct questionnaire
5
Q
Benefits of Likert Scales
A
- universal method
- efficient and inexpensive
- easy questions
- easy administration
- easily quantifiable
6
Q
Disadvantages of Likert Scales
A
- influence by the way the previous questions were answered
- all items are given the same weight
- sometimes people try to avoid the extreme options in the scale
7
Q
Thurstone Scale
A
made up of statements about a particular issue and each statement has a numerical value indicating the respondent’s attitude about the issue - favorable or unfavorable
8
Q
Benefits of Thurstone Scales
A
- attitudinal value is pre-determined through judges
- measures on an interval scale instead of ordinal
- able to indicate intensity of people’s attitudes in varying degrees
9
Q
Disadvantages of Thurstone Scale
A
- difficult to get together a number of judges
- judges might have different opinions
10
Q
Constructing a Thurstone Scale
A
- collect statements/attitudes towards an issue
- select a group of judges with expertise
- have judges rating on a 11-point scale
- calculate median value of the rates
- discard statements that are scattered over the scale
- select best statements
- construct a questionnaire with the statements
11
Q
Guttman Scale
A
- cumulative or scalogram analysis
- aim: establish one-dimensional continuum for a concept
12
