Chapter 1 - Panic Attacks and You (Part 1 - Unmasking the Trick) Flashcards
Agoraphobia
An anxiety disorder that causes people to fear and avoid places or situations where they might feel trapped or unable to escape
Symptoms that I’ve experienced:
- Palpitations (Accelerated heart beat, Pounding heart)
- Trembling/Shaking
- Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
- Fear of loosing control or going crazy
- Fear of dying
~
Panic Attack
A discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which symptoms develop abruptly and reach a peak within ten minutes.
I have experienced multiple panic attacks
~
Panic attacks have caused me to:
- Worry about having additional future panic attacks
- Worry about what a panic attack implies about me or might do to me.
- Have a significant change in my behavior because of the panic attacks, and fears of more attacks.
~
I have experienced panic attacks “out of the blue”
~
I do avoid going into certain situations, or engaging in certain activities, in an effort to avoid having another panic attack
~
There are situations or activities in which I will only participate if I can try to prevent a panic attack by bringing either a trusted companion, or certain objects that reassure me, such as a cellular phone or a water bottle.
~
There are, have been activities or situations I did not avoid which I experience(d) a great deal of anxiety and fear about having a panic attack.
~
I do NOT experience and fear of situations in which:
- I am exposed to unfamilar people
- I receive attention from others
- I make some kind of presentation or performance for an audience
~
I do NOT fear that I will act in an embarrassing or humiliating way in public situations. (I slightly do, but very minor. I learn from my mistakes)
~
I do NOT avoid public situations in order to avoid anxiety
~
I do NOT become highly anxious when I am actually in a public situation
~
The type of situations or objects I avoid are:
- Heights
- Elevators
- Driving
- Sun (Daytime)
- No vitamins on me
- No food on me
- No water on me
~
I fear these situations only when I have to face them.
