Chapter 1 - An Intro to Life and Earth Flashcards
Evolution
The change in DNA that occurs in a population over time
Variation (Evolution)
Mutations due to natural differences in DNA
Inheritance (Evolution)
Inherited mutations
Natural Selection (Evolution)
Inherited mutations that help individuals survive and reproduce
Scientific Method
Observe, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Conclusion
OQHEC
Inductive Reasoning
Specific to general; discovery
Many facts lead to a general conclusion; specific observations lead to a broad generalization
Deductive Reasoning
General to specific; verification
If this, then that; broad theory is investigated for a specific conclusion
Experiments
Testable, single variable, controls, quantitative, large sample size
Conclusion (Scientific Method)
Repeatable, peer review, communication, falsification
Falsification (Scientific Method Conclusion)
Conclusions must be falsifiable - meaning they can be contradicted by a basic statement.
Ex “All swans are white and always have been white.”
If failed falsification, true claim
