Chapter 1 Flashcards
Define anatomy
study of the structure of body parts and organisation
Define physiology
study of how body parts work
Describe the major body cavities
Dorsal - cranial cavity is continuos with the vertebral cavity
Ventral
-Thoracic (mediastinum, pleural cavity, pericardial cavity)
-Abdomino-pelvic cavity
Which cavity contains most of the bodys organs?
Ventral
List the components of the integumentary system
skin, hair, nails, sebaceous (oil) glands, sweat glands, regulates temp, produces vit D
List the components of the endocrine system
Hypothalamus, thymus, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, pituitary gland, pineal gland, pancreas, adrenal gland, ovaries, testes, hormones
List the components of lymphatic system
lymphatic vessels, lymphatic fluid, lymph nodes, thymus, spleen
What is the purpose of lymph fluid?
to defend the body from infection
Describe the planes of the body
Frontal - anterior/posterior
Sagittal- left -right
Transverse- superior/inferior
Discuss the membrane of the heart
The heart is surrounded by pericardial membranes, including the visceral pericardium over the hearts surface
Discuss the membrane of the lungs
Lungs are lined with a membrane called the parietal pleura and covered by a membrane called the visceral pleura
Discuss the membrane of the abdomino pelvic cavity
The abdominopelvic cavity is lined with peritoneal membranes. The parietal peritoneum lines it walls, and the visceral peritoneum covers each organ.
Name the 9 abdominal regions
R hypochondriac - epigastric - L hypochondriac
R lumbar - umbilical - L lumbar
R iliac - hypogastric - L iliac
What seperates the thoracic cavity & the abdominopelvic cavity?
Diaphragm
What surrounds the thoracic cavity?
chest muscles & ribs
