Intro
What are the sub disciplines of Biological Anthropology?
Cultural, Archeology, and Linguistic. They all focus on what it means to be human.
What is cultural relitivism?
When an individual suspends their sense of what is expected in their own culture so that they can understand other perspectives without judgement.
What is participant observation?
Field work
Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is defined as what?
Linguistic relativity- language shapes thought
What is biological anthropology?
The study of human evolution and biological variation
Define hominis.
humans and fossil human relatives
What is applied anthropology
Sometimes considered the fifth sub discipline; involves practical application of anthropological theories, logic, and findings to solve real world problems.
Define Holism
The idea that the parts of a system interconnect and interact to make up the whole
Human variation
The physiological differences among humans around the world.
Human adaptations
physiological responses to extreme environments- including physiological responses and genetic advantages which aid in survival.
What is empirical evidence?
Observable evidence
Hypothesis
Explanation of observed facts; details how and why observed phenomena are the way they are. They rely on empirical evidence, are testable, and are able to be refuted.
What is a scholarly peer review
The work of an individual must go through rigorous scrutiny and testing from peers in the same field before it is accepted for publication in a journal or book.
What is a theory in science?
An explanation of observations that addresses a wide range of phenomena. Set on the same standards as the hypothesis.
Define law
A prediction about what will happen given certain conditions, NOT how or why- an equation for ABV of alcohol.
