Chapt 12/26 Flashcards
Explain how stress response is related to disease
Elevated BP and HR, bronchodilation and increased ventilation, increased blood glucose levels, arousal of central nervous system and decreased inflammatory and immune response
Describe how severe stress may lead to acute renal failure, stress ulcers, or infection
Prolonged severe vasoconstriction, ischemia causes cell damage and leads to renal failure.
Vasoconstriction and glucocorticoids, decrease in muscle regeneration and mucosa production leads to ulcers
Depression of the inflammatory and immune response leads to infection and slowed healing
Positive coping strategies
Adequate rest and healthy diet Creative solutions to decrease stress Regular moderate exercise Distracting activities Counseling and support services Relaxation techniques
Describe the stress response
Homeostasis- compensation to minor changes
Stressor- factor that creates significant change in body’s function
severe or prolonged stress can cause dysfunction- increased wear and tear on tissues, exhaustion of resources, exacerbation of chronic conditions
