Chap 5 FRQ terms Flashcards
Selective attention
the capacity for or process of reacting to certain stimuli selectively when several occur simultaneously
Parallel processing (vision OR auditory, but not both)
the ability of the brain to simultaneously process incoming stimuli of differing quality (color, motion, shape, depth
Frequency theory and place theory (auditory)
hearing sound stimuli at low frequencies is accounted to the frequency theory, whereas those at high frequencies are attributed to the place principle
Sensory adaptation (touch)
a reduction in sensitivity to a stimulus after constant exposure to it
Sensory interaction (taste & smell)
the interaction of the senses with each other and how they influence each other
-food tastes more bland when a person has a stuffy nose and can’t smell it properly
Perceptual set (visual perception)
a predisposition to perceive things in a certain way
-we often tend to notice only certain aspects of an object or situation while ignoring other details
One monocular depth cue
the information in the retinal image that gives us information about depth and distance but can be inferred from just a single retina
-linear perspective: causes parallel lines to appear to meet at some point in the distance
One gestalt principle of visual perception
rules that describe how the human eye perceives visual elements
-figure/ground
-Continuity
-connectedness
-Proximity
-Closure
