Chap 20 Chaining Flashcards
Behavior Chain
a specific sequence of discrete responses, each associated with a particular stimulus condition
Each response in a behavior chain produces a stimulus change that simultaneously serves a as a _________ __________ for the response that produced it, and as a _________ _________ for the next response in the chain.
Conditioned reinforcer
Discriminative stimulus
Behavior chain with a limited hold
a sequence of behaviors that must be performed correctly and within a certain period of time to produce reinforcement
Task analysis
breaking a complex skill down into smaller, teachable units that are sequentially ordered
Methods for identifying and validating components of a task analysis
- Observe competent individuals perform the desired sequence of behaviors
- Consult with experts who are skilled in performing the task
- Perform the behaviors oneself
Two methods for assessing a learner’s ability to perform each behavior in the task analysis in a correct sequence
Single-opportunity and multiple-opportunity
Single-opportunity
Designed to assess ability to perform each behavior in the task analysis in correct sequence
Multiple-opportunity
Evaluates level of mastery across all behaviors in the task analysis
A variation of forward chaining in which assistance is provided during all steps that the person is unable to perform independently.
total-task chaining
Backward changing with lead aheads
Not every step int he task analysis is trained; some steps are just probed
Behavior chain interruption strategy (BCIS)
Relies on participant’s skill to perform the critical elements of the chain independently, but the chain is interrupted at a predetermined step so another behavior can be emitted
In order to break a behavior chain, you need to determine the initial ____ and substitute an _____ for an alternative behavior
SD, SD
Factors affecting performance of a chain of behaviors include how _______, _____, and ____-_____ the task analysis is.
complete, accurate, well-sequenced
