Chap 14: Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Structural Organization:
Central Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System
Central Nervous System
CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System
PNS
cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and ganglia
Ganglion:
group of neuron cell bodies located OUTSIDE the CNS
Nucleus:
group of neuron cell bodies located INSIDE the CNS
Functional Organization:
Sensory nervous system
Motor nervous system
Sensory nervous system
axons that transmit a nerve impulse from a peripheral structure to the CNS
A. Somatic Sensory
B. Visceral Sensory
Somatic Sensory
transmits input from skin, fascia, joints, and skeletal muscle
visceral sensory
transmits input from viscera (organs of the digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, and endocrine systems.)
Motor Nervous System:
consists of all axons that transmit a nerve impulse from the CNS to a muscle or gland.
A. Somatic nervous system
B. Autonomic Nervous system
Somatic Nervous system
voluntary control of skeletal muscle
autonomic nervous system
involuntary control of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands.
“automatic” actions
CNS & PNS 3 functions:
- collect information
- process and evaluate information
- respond to information
