Prosocial behavior
Helping behavior that benefits others
Moral development
The changes in people’s sense of justice & of what is right & wrong, & in their behavior related to moral issues
Abstract modeling
The process in which modeling paves the way for the development of more general rules & principles
Empathy
The understanding of what another individual feels
Preconventional morality
Kohlberg’s first level of moral reasoning in which the concrete interests of the individual are considered in terms of rewards & punishments
Conventional morality
Kohlberg’s 2nd level of moral reasoning in which people approach moral problems as members of society
Postconventional morality
Kohlberg’s 3rd level of moral reasoning in which people use moral principles that are seen as broader than those of any particular society
Social domain approach
The concept that moral reasoning needs to be considered in the context in which judgments are being made at a given time
Authoritarian parents
Parents who are controlling, punitive, rigid, & cold, & whose word is law. They value strict, unquestioning obedience from their children & do not tolerate expressions of disagreement
Permissive parents
Parents who provide lax & inconsistent feedback & require little of their children
Authoritative parents
Parents who are firm, setting clear & consistent limits, but who try to reason w/their children, giving explanations for why they should behave in a particular way
Uninvolved parents
Parents who show almost no interest in their children & indifferent, rejecting behavior
Neglect
A form of child abuse
Values
The qualities people see as most desirable & important, affecting people’s thinking & behavior
Aggression
Intentional injury or harm to another person
Emotional self-regulation
The capability to adjust emotions to a desired state & level of intensity
Instrumental aggression
Aggression motivated by the desire to obtain a concrete goal, such as playing with a desirable toy that another child is playing with
Relational aggression
Nonphysical aggression that is intended to hurt another person’s feelings
Tension building
The 1st stage of marital aggression in which a batterer becomes upset & shows dissatisfaction initially thru verbal abuse
Acute battering incident
The 2nd stage of marital aggression in which physical abuse actually occurs
Loving contrition stage
The 3rd stage of marital aggression, which occurs in some but not all cases, in which the batterer feels remorse & apologizes for his actions
Cycle of violence hypothesis
The theory that the abuse & neglect that children suffer predispose them as adults to abuse & neglect their own children
Elder abuse
The physical or psychological mistreatment or neglect of elderly individuals
