Self-concept
A person’s identity, or set of beliefs about what one is like as an individual
Self-awareness
Knowledge of oneself
Collectivistic orientation
A philosophy that promotes the notion of interdependence
Individualistic orientation
A philosophy that emphasizes personal identity & the uniqueness of the individual
Race dissonance
The phenomenon in which minority children indicate preferences for majority values or people
Identity achievement
The status of adolescents who commit to a particular identity following a period of crisis during which they consider various alternatives; Marcia
Identity foreclosure
The status of adolescents who prematurely commit to an identity without adequately exploring alternatives; Marcia
Moratorium
The status of adolescents who may have explored various identity alternatives to some degree, but have not yet committed themselves; Marcia
Identity diffusion
The status of adolescents who consider various identity alternatives, but never commit to one or never even consider identity options in any conscious way; Marcia
Social clock
The culturally determined psychological timepiece providing a sense of whether we have reached the majority benchmarks of life at the appropriate time in comparison to our peers
Career consolidation
A stage that is entered between the ages of 20 & 40, when young adults become centered on their careers; Vaillant
Self-esteem
An individual’s overall & specific positive & negative self-evaluation
Social comparison
The desire to evaluate one’s own behavior, abilities, expertise, & opinions by comparing them to those of others
Reference groups
Groups of people with whom one compares oneself
Fantasy period
According to Ginzberg, the period, lasting until about age 11, when career choices are made, & discarded, without regard to skills, abilities, or available job opportunities
Tentative period
The 2nd stage of Ginzberg’s theory which spans adolescence when people begin to think in pragmatic terms about the requirements of various jobs & how their own abilities might fit with them
Realistic period
The 3rd stage of Ginzberg’s theory, which occurs in early adulthood, when people begin to explore specific career options, & then narrow their choices & make a commitment
Communal professions
Occupations that are associated w/relationships
Agentic professions
Occupations that are associated with getting things accomplished
Extrinsic motivation
Motivation that drives people to obtain tangible rewards, such as money & prestige
Intrinsic motivation
Motivation that causes people to work for their own enjoyment, not for the rewards work may bring
Status
The evaluation by society of the role a person plays
Burnout
A situation that occurs when workers experience dissatisfaction, disillusionment, frustration, & weariness from their jobs
