Ch9 Respiration Flashcards
Aerobic respiration reaction
exothermic reaction
transfers energy to the environment
aerobic respiration formula word equation
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
aerobic respiration formula symbol equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Uses of respiration
- make muscles contract
- maintaining constant internal body temperature
- in plants- active transport in root hair cells and making amino acids
- synthesis reactions- building up smaller molecules into larger ones
Response to excercise
Heart rate increases and arteries dilate to increase blood flow
Breathing depth and rate increases(O2 supply increases and CO2 removed faster)
Glycogen stored in muscles is converted back into glucose to supply energy for respiration
Anaerobic respiration word equation
glucose -> lactic acid + ‘energy’
lactic acid
causes muscle fatigue and cramps
Oxygen debt
Increased breathing after excercise
It breaks down lactic acid
Oxygen debt equation
lactic acid + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Fermentation equation
glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
liver metabolic reactions
- detoxifying poisonous substances such as ethanol
- passing breakdown products into the blood so they can be excreted in urine
- breaking down old, worn out blood cells and storing iron until it is needed to synthesise more blood cells
liver’s role
converts lactic acid into glucose
