Ch10 The human nervous system Flashcards
Homeostasis
Maintaining a stable environment inside the body and cells in response to internal and external conditions
Internal conditions are controlled
body temperature
water content
blood glucose concentration
receptors
cells that detect changes in internal or external environment(stimuli)
coordination centres(CNS)
area that receive and process info from the receptors
send out signals and coordinate response of the body
e.g. brain, spinal cord and pancreas
effectors
muscles or glands that produce a response to stimulus that has been received to restore optimum levels
nervous system
stimuli receptor sensory neurone CNS motor neurone effector response
reflexes
automatic and rapid responses to avoid damage or harm
reflex arc
stimulus receptor sensory neurone relay neurone in spinal cord of unconscious part of the brain motor neurone effector response
synapses
physical gaps between neurones that electric impulses can’t leap across
How synapses work
electrical impulses reach synapses
chemicals are released from sacs
chemicals(neurotransmitters) diffuse across
chemicals attach to the surface of the next neurone and create a new impulse
