Ch.12 Interactive glossary Flashcards
A characteristic of Yersinia and Francisella species in which stain gathers at the poles of the cells, yielding the appearance of safety pins.
Bipolar staining
A common name for tetanus, based on the spasms of the jaw muscles; also called trismus.
Lockjaw
A form of plague in which Yersinia pestis invades the lung tissues and causes severe respiratory symptoms.
Pneumonic plague
A microscopic fiber located along cell walls in certain species of spirochetes; contractions of the filaments yield undulating motion in the cell.
Endoflagellum
A mild arthropodborne bacterial disease, transmitted by the tick and by contact, caused by Francisella tularensis; characterized by mild fever and vague symptoms of malaise.
Tularemia
A physiological process in which the enzymes from wounded tissue digest the surrounding layer of cells, inducing a spreading death to the tissue cells.
Gangrene
A pink pimple on the skin.
Papule
A rash consisting of pink-red spots that later become dark red before fading; occurs in rickettsial diseases.
Maculopapular rash
A relatively serious tickborne disease of the blood caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, characterized by high fever and a skin rash beginning on the body extremities and proceeding toward the body trunk.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever
A serious arthropodborne bacterial disease transmitted by the flea, caused by Yersinia pestis and characterized by severe blood hemorrhaging.
Plague
A serious arthropodborne bacterial disease transmitted by ticks, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi; characterized by a skin rash (EM) and malaise, and later a swelling and degeneration of the large joints.
Lyme disease
A serious bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, characterized by severe blood hemorrhaging; the inhalation form also called woolsorter’s disease.
Anthrax
A serious soilborne bacterial disease caused by Clostridium perfringens, characterized by gas accumulation in the muscle tissues and gangrene; often called myonecrosis.
Gas gangrene
A soilborne bacterial disease caused by Leptospira interrogans, characterized by mild fever.
Leptospirosis
A soilborne bacterial disease of the muscles and nerves, caused by toxins produced by Clostridium tetani; characterized by uncontrolled muscle spasms.
Tetanus
A swelling of the lymph nodes.
Bubo
An alternate name for tularemia.
Rabbit fever
An animal disease that may be transmitted to humans.
Zoonosis
An exotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani; acts at synapses, thereby stimulating muscle contractions.
Tetanospasmin
An expanding circular red rash that occurs on the skin of patients with Lyme disease.
Erythema migrans (EM)
The form of plague now endemic in some animals in the southwestern states.
Sylvatic plague
The form of plague that localizes in the lymph nodes.
Bubonic plague
