What is Empricism?
Obtaining knowledge through experience (testing)

Description, Explanation, Prediction, and Change.
What did Descartes believe in?
That the mind and body are separate; the mind cannot be observed.
What did Hobbes believe in?
The mind is the brain, so it can be observed.
Who was Wundt?
He’s the father of modern psychology; believed in Structuralism; developed the first psych lab
What did William James believe in?
Natural Selection; Functionalism; the mind works as a whole.
What is structuralism?
studying the brain in parts
What is Functionalism?
Studying the brain as a whole.
Who was the beginning of clinical Psychology?
Freud
What is the Psychoanalytic Theory?
That the unconscious is largely responsible for our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.
What is Behaviorism?
studying observable behavior that can be measured.
Why did Behaviorism develop?
Because introspection was not easily tested
What is Cognitive Psychology?
studying mental processes through technology
What is Cognitive neuroscience?
It attempts to understand the links between cognitive processes and brain activity.
