Ch.1 Human Body Systems And Body Cavities Flashcards
Skeletal System Consists of what, and what does it do
Bones, joints, and their cartilage. Protects body and supports it and its movement. Provides surface for muscle attachment and houses cells that make blood.
Integumentary System Consists of what, and what does it do
Skin, Hair, Nails, Oil glands, and hypodermis. Protects, regulates body temp, eliminates some waste, makes vitamin D. Provides insulation, detects pain/pressure etc.
Muscular System Consists of what, and what does it do
Refers to skeletal muscle only, produce body movements and makes heat
Lymphatic System Consists of what, and what does it do
Lymphatic fluid, vessels, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, and tonsils
Cells that carry out immune responses (B cells, T cells for examp)
Returns fluids and proteins to blood, carries lipids from intestines to blood, protects against disease causing microbes
Cardiovascular System Consists of what, and what does it do
Blood, heart, vessels
Carries oxygen and nutrients to cells
Nervous System Consists of what, and what does it do
Brain, spinal cord, eyes, ears, nerves and other fun stuff not noted in the book
Generates action potential (nerve impulses) by sense change and the reactions to that change
Respiratory System Consists of what, and what does it do
Lungs, ,trachea, larynx, and bronchial tubes
Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide, air flowing out can be used to produce sound (voice)
Endocrine System Consists of what, and what does it do
Hormone producing glands that have too many to list but here’s some: thyroid gland, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries.
Regulates body activity through hormones
Digestive System Consists of what, and what does it do
Mouth, throat, stomach, large and small intestines, liver, gallbladder,
Breakdown and absorption of food and nutrients, gets rid of waste
Urinary System Consists of what, and what does it do
Kidneys, uterus, urinary bladder, urethra
Makes you peepee, maintains acid based balance of body fluids, regulates blood cell production
Reproductive System Consists of what, and what does it do
Gonads (testes for male, ovaries for female) For females, fallopian tubes, uterus vagina
For males, seminal vesicles, prostate, ductus, penis
Makes the cells needed for fertilization, release hormones that regulate reproduction and other body processes
Where is the dorsal cavity and what parts does it consists of?
Back of body, has the cranial cavity and spinal/vertrabal canal
Where is the Ventral cavity and what parts does it consists of?
Front of body, has the Superior Thoracic cavity Separated by the diaphragm from the abdominopelvic cavity
What are the four parts that are in the Superior Thoracic cavity?
Left and right pleural cavity for each lung, pericardial cavity for the heart, and Mediastinum as the partition that separates these parts
What are the two parts of the abdominopelvic cavity
Superior abdominal cavity and inferior pelvic cavity
