Civic engagement
-Individual or collective actions to identify & address issues of public concern
-Provides opportunity for students to learn about diversity & good citizenship

-Integrates learning activities w/ voluntary, community-based activities that develop civic responsibility & engagement (to address human & community needs)
-Form of experiential edu
-Incl structured reflection & debriefing to facilitate building connections b/t EXP & curricular content
Benefits of using SL as learning activity:
-Can be used to enhance cultural competence to work w/ diverse pop’s for learners in variety of settings
-Can change attitudes towards homeless ppl
What is goal of SL?
Fundamentally infl long-term actions of students (not to practice skills)

How is Study-abroad EXPs diff from SL?
-Time commitment is usually longer
-Focuses on more in-depth examination of culture, roles, policy, EXPs
-Long-term objective focuses more on personalized outcomes (i.e. improved job skills or enhanced opportunities for grad edu, careers, internat’l travels)
-Emphasizes content learning about 1’s own & other cultures
How is SL diff from Study-abroad EXPs?
-Blend of learning & volunteering
-Tends to emphasize on reciprocal learning & growth for faculty & community members (along w/ students)
-Has longer-term outcomes
-Focuses less on cultures & “more on results of cultural interactions” (i.e. decr racism)
What is an example to strength ethical & civic responsibility?
Becoming an officer for student gov
Student volunteers to tutor or become mentor
What is an example of exercising civic responsibility?
Voting in campus & local elections
