Ch 9 Articulations Flashcards
What are articulations?
points of contact between bone and bone
or
between bone and cartilage
or
between bones and teeth
What determines range of motion?
tightness of fit between articulating surfaces
precise manner in which surfaces fit together
tightness of tissues that bind bones of joint together
positions of ligaments, muscles, and tendons surrounding joint
What are the structural classifications of joints?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What are the functional classifications of joints?
Synarthrosis = immovable
Amphiarthrosis = slightly moveable
Diarthrosis = freely moveable
What are the parts of the diarthrosic joint pictured?
Where is the joint in a diarthosic joint?
inside synovial cavity
Where does the joint capsule connect in a diarthrosic joint?
joint capsule fuses to periosteum. the outside of bone.
What kind of cartilage is contained within a diarthosic joint? Fibrous capsule?
hyaline cartilage in freely moveable joint
collagen in fibrous capsule to prevent pulling
What are the ligaments in the knee joint?
What are the following movements:
Gliding movements
Angular movements
flexion vs. extension vs. hypertension
adduction vs. abduction
Rotational movements
Circumduction movements
Inversion vs. eversion
Protraction vs. retraction
Elevation vs. depression
Supination vs. pronation
Dorsiflexion vs. plantar flexion
