Q

What are the characteristics of Areolar Connective Tissue?

A

Collagen stained pink with lots of open space.

Dark Fibroblasts which synthesize collagen fibers

Loose space allows macrophages in

Adipocytes (Fat Tissue)

Cushioning or like packing material

Secrete some hormones

Q

What are the characteristics of Dense Regular Connective Tissue?

A

Regularly organized fibers tightly packed in one direction

Resists stretch in longitudinal direction (not perpindicular)

Found in ligaments (bone to bone) and tendons (bone to muscle)

Q

What are the characteristics of Dense Irregular Connective tissue?

A

Tightly packed fibers in all directions

  • Resists being pulled apart in all directions
  • Have this type of tissue where you don’t want ANY stretching to occur

Q

What are the characteristics of Dense Elastic Connective Tissue?

A

Regularly organized tissues in one direction but not as tightly packed as Dense Regular

Found where you need stretch/recoil (elasticity) such as in the heart or aorta

Pink stain is collagen, Elastin fibers stain dark purple squiggly lines

Q

What are the characteristics of Hyaline Cartilage?

A

Purplish Stain found underneath epithelial tissue

Found in between bones, trachea, nose

Does not regenerate

Contains alot of water so good at resisting compression

Q

What are the characteristics of Fibrocartilage?

A

Contains Collagen + Cartilage

Usually stains blue

Found in places where you need to resist Pulling and Compression

  • Like vertebral column
  • Cartilaginous part can retain water (compression)

A

Cartilage that can stretch/recoil (elasticity)

Continues to grow throughout life

Think Ears, epiglottis

16
Q

What is a mucous membrane (mucosa)?

A

Lining of internal tract with opening to outside world

-Like digestive or respiratory tract

17
Q

What is a Serous membrane (serosa)?

A

Lining of internal body cavity not open to outside world
-Lines cavity and lines outside of organ

Parietal layer: lines wall of cavity
Visceral layer: lines surface of organ in cavity

18
Q

What is a Cutaneous membrane (skin)?

A

In between layers

19
Q

What is a Synovial membrane (not real membrane)?

A

Encapsulates any freely movable joint

-Filled with synovial fluid made by synoviocytes

20
Q

What is the endothelium and mesothelium?

A

Endothelium - epithelium inside blood vessels

Mesothelium - epithelium of serosa
