Ch 5: Connective Tissues Flashcards
What are the types of connective tissue?
- Loose Connective Tissue
- Dense Connective Tissue
- Cartilage
- Bone
- Blood
What are the types of Loose Connective Tissue?
Areolar
Adipose
Reticular
What are the types of Dense Connective Tissue?
Dense Regular
Dense Irregular
Elastic Connective Tissue
What are the types of Cartilage?
Hyaline
Fibrocartilage
Elastic
What are the characteristics of Areolar Connective Tissue?
Collagen stained pink with lots of open space.
Dark Fibroblasts which synthesize collagen fibers
Loose space allows macrophages in
What are the characteristics of Adipose Tissue?
Adipocytes (Fat Tissue)
Cushioning or like packing material
Secrete some hormones
What are the characteristics of Reticular Connective tissue?
For structure/framework of stroma
Can stain Purple or Brown
What are the characteristics of Dense Regular Connective Tissue?
Regularly organized fibers tightly packed in one direction
Resists stretch in longitudinal direction (not perpindicular)
Found in ligaments (bone to bone) and tendons (bone to muscle)
What are the characteristics of Dense Irregular Connective tissue?
Tightly packed fibers in all directions
- Resists being pulled apart in all directions
- Have this type of tissue where you don’t want ANY stretching to occur
What are the characteristics of Dense Elastic Connective Tissue?
Regularly organized tissues in one direction but not as tightly packed as Dense Regular
Found where you need stretch/recoil (elasticity) such as in the heart or aorta
Pink stain is collagen, Elastin fibers stain dark purple squiggly lines
What are the characteristics of Hyaline Cartilage?
Purplish Stain found underneath epithelial tissue
Found in between bones, trachea, nose
Does not regenerate
Contains alot of water so good at resisting compression
What are the characteristics of Fibrocartilage?
Contains Collagen + Cartilage
Usually stains blue
Found in places where you need to resist Pulling and Compression
- Like vertebral column
- Cartilaginous part can retain water (compression)
What are the characteristics of Elastic Cartilage?
Cartilage that can stretch/recoil (elasticity)
Continues to grow throughout life
Think Ears, epiglottis
What type of cell synthesizes collagen/reticular/elastin fibers? What kind of cell synthesizes cartilage?
Collagen/Reticular/Elastin Fibers: Fibroblast
Cartilage: Chondrocyte
What are membranes? What are the types?
Composed of epithelium + connective tissue
Mucous Membranes (Mucosa) Serous Membranes (Serosa) Cutaneous Membranes (Skin) Synovial Membranes (not real membrane)
