Memory for specific experiences from our life, which can include both episodic and semantic components.
Autobiographical Memory
The enhanced memory for adolescence and young adulthood found in people over 40.
Reminiscence bump
This hypothesis proposes that memory is enhanced for events that occur as a persons self-image of life identity is being formed.
self-image hypothesis
This hypothesis proposes that periods of rapid change that are followed by stability cause stronger encoding of memories.
Cognitive hypothesis
This hypothesis distinguishes between a persons life story, which is all the events that have occurred in a persons life.
Cultural life script hypothesis
culturally expected events that occur at a particular time in a life span
Cultural life script
The tendency for the most notable public events in a persons life to be perceived to occur when the person is young.
Youth bias
A brain structure in the medial temporal lobe that helps regulate emotion and encode memories.
Amygdala
Refers to a persons memory for the circumstances surrounding shocking, highly charged events. (9/11) Larger scale memories like Harvey, JFK.
Flashbulb memory
Mnemonist memory, people who can remember an exceptional amount of detail and dates.
Superior Memory
Misleading information presented after a person witnesses an event can change how the person describes the event later.
Misinformation Effect
Someone who demonstrates extraordinarily keen memory ability, usually based on using a special technique for memory enhancement.
Mnemonist
Individual experiences some sensations in a sensory modality different from the sense that was physically stimulated. (Colors are associated with sound)
Synesthesia
Recall not an exact replica of original events, but a construction built and rebuilt from various sources
