Ch. 8 - Cardiorespiratory System Flashcards
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart
What do capillaries do?
Sites for nutrient and waste exchange
What do veins do?
Return deoxygenated blood to the heart
What is the cardiac cycle?
The period from the beginning of one heartbeat to the next.
What is cardiorespiratory fitness?
The capacity of the heart and lungs to deliver blood and oxygen during exercise
What is oxygen-carrying capacity determined by?
1) The ability to adequately ventilate alveoli in the lungs 2) hemoglobin concentration in the blood
What is hemoglobin?
A protein in red blood cells that is specifically adapted to carry oxygen molecules
What is minute ventilation?
The volume of air moved through the lungs on a minute by minute basis
What are symptoms of heat exhaustion?
Weak, rapid pulse Low BP Headache Nausea Dizziness Weakness Paleness Clammy skin Sweating
What are the symptoms of heat stroke?
Hot, dry, red skin
Rapid, strong pulse
Labored breathing
Elevated core body temp
If you suspect a client has heat exhaustion, you should
Stop exercising Move to a cool, ventilated area Lie down & elevate feet Give fluids Monitor temperature
If you suspect a client has heat stroke, you should
Stop exercising
Remove clothing
Cool body, give fluids
Go to ER
What are the cardio respiratory guidelines for healthy adults?
Moderate intensity (below VT1) minimum of 5 days a week, vigorous intensity (VT1 to VT2) minimum 3 days a week, or combination of both 3-5 days/week
What are ways to measure intensity?
HR (MHR, HRR) VO2 caloric expenditure talk test & HR at VT1 blood lactate & HR at VT2
What is the standard HR formula?
MHR = 220-age
