Ch. 15 Considerations for Clients w/ Muscoskeletal Issues Flashcards
Lateral epicondylitis, inflammation of the wrist extensors is commonly referred to as
tennis elbow
Which nerve is commonly compressed due to carpal tunnel syndrome?
median nerve
Tightness in which structure can be a cause of patellofemoral pain syndrome?
IT band
Stretching which muscles has been shown to relieve medial tibial stress syndrome?
soleus and gastrocnemius
What are muscle sprains?
Injuries in which the muscle works beyond its capacity
What are ligament strains?
Injuries in which an external force applies pressure that stretches the ligament to the point of injury
What is a non contact injury?
Occurs when a ground reaction force causes a tear
What does the acronym RICE stand for?
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevate
what is cartilage damage caused by?
Compression of joint and a shearing motion; common in the knees
What are some overuse conditions?
Tendonitis, bursitis, fascitis
On the perceived pain scale, when should exercise discontinue?

What is piriformis syndrome?
When the piriformis muscles become tight or inflamed, causing compression of the sciatic nerve
What is impingement syndrome?
Compression and inflammation of the subsrapsinatus tendon (shoulder)
What is IT band friction syndrome?
An overuse condition that occurs when the distal portion of the IT band rubs the lateral femoral epicondyle
What is achilles tendonitis?
Inflammation of the achilles tendon, often triggered by a sudden start from a standing position
