Ch. 12 Considerations for Clients W Obesity Flashcards
What happens when a person eats an insufficient number of calories?
some protein may be used for energy; thus protein needs increase while protein intake usually decreases
How does the hormone leptin function?
leptin provides information about how much energy is currently stored in the body’s fat cells. Leptin functions in a negative feedback loop so when fat cells decrease in size, leptin decreases, sending a message to eat more.
How does the hormone adiponectin function?
Adiponectin helps insulin by sending blood glucose into the body cells for use as storage or fuel, thus increasing the cells’ insulin sensitivity.
What is the current RDA for protein intake?
45-56 g a day or 10-35% of total calories
